The Doctor’s Corner: 9 Tips for Dealing With Chronic Pain Syndrome

  2. Take an active role in your recovery by understanding and following the advice of your treating physician – this helps for disability claims as well.  Take ownership of your condition and figure out what you can do to be a stronger partner in your treatment and pain care.
  3.   5. Make sure you acknowledge and deal with any feelings of depression or anger that you may experience.  Working through these issues can help reduce stress and make the pain more manageable.
  6. Practicing relaxation techniques is one of the best ways to naturally deal with pain.  Meditation and breathing techniques are common methods used to supplement traditional medical care and treatment.  Even some types of yoga and alternative or Eastern medicine can help improve outcomes.
  7. Stay active in a thoughtful way, even when it hurts.  Unused muscles and joints can produce more pain than toned, flexible ones.  Work with your doctor and therapists to create an exercise plan that stays in line with your limitations but also allows you to challenge yourself safely.
  8. Look at the big picture. An individual’s life is made up of much more than just their pain.  Focus attention on what you still can do and the positives in your life.  Develop new areas of interests.  A disabling condition does not have to mean the end of your happiness.
  9. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  There are millions of others who are suffering from the similar symptoms and conditions that may have discovered other pain and stress management techniques that can help you in your specific situation.  Also, make sure to reach out to help others in similar circumstances.  Share some of the tools and techniques you’ve learned with those that may be at different points in their journey.  This can help build a sense of community and soothe the stresses and feelings of helplessness you may experience in dealing with your chronic pain.
